Comprehensive Overview of Individual Psychotherapy

Individual psychotherapy offers clients a structured yet flexible space to explore their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors with the guidance of a trained therapist. Sessions typically last around 45 to 60 minutes, although this can vary depending on the therapist’s approach and the client’s needs. The frequency of sessions can also vary, ranging from weekly to biweekly appointments, with adjustments made based on progress and goals.

At the beginning of therapy, the therapist and client engage in an initial assessment phase, often referred to as the induction process. This phase involves discussing the client’s presenting issues, personal history, treatment goals, and preferences. It’s an opportunity for the therapist to gather relevant information and establish rapport, trust, and a collaborative therapeutic relationship.

Once therapy begins, sessions follow a structured yet client-centered format. Clients are encouraged to discuss their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and nonjudgmental environment. The therapist may use various techniques and interventions to help clients gain insight into their challenges, develop coping strategies, and work towards their goals.

Therapy sessions may include:

Exploration & Reflection

Clients are invited to explore their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, often through open-ended questions and reflective dialogue. This process can help clients gain clarity and understanding of their internal experiences.

Skill Building

Therapists may teach clients coping skills and strategies to manage distressing emotions, improve communication, or change unhelpful thought patterns. This may involve techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, or other evidence-based approaches.

Problem-Solving

Clients are encouraged to identify and work through specific challenges or problems they are facing, with the therapist providing support, guidance, and feedback throughout the process.

Goal Setting & Progress Monitoring

Together, the therapist and client establish treatment goals and regularly assess progress. This collaborative approach ensures that therapy remains focused and effective, with adjustments made as needed.

Issues addressed in individual psychotherapy can vary widely and may include anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship difficulties, self-esteem issues, life transitions, and more. The therapist tailors the treatment approach to meet the unique needs and goals of each client, drawing from a range of therapeutic modalities and techniques.

Overall, individual psychotherapy offers a supportive and confidential space for clients to explore, heal, and grow, with the therapist serving as a compassionate guide and facilitator on their journey towards greater well-being.

Meet Our Team

JEYARAJAN

Practice Owner

My clients describe me as warm and easy to open up to.  It is important to me that the treatment plan fits my clients’ goals and that this is a collaborative approach.

Together we will work to achieve the changes you want for yourself, identify the root of the problems or symptoms you are facing, and you’ll learn more about yourself through the process.

Our work can lead to a deeper understanding of yourself:  Your inner fears, wounds, outdated and/or inaccurate negative core beliefs about yourself, needs and wants that are repressed, etc.  Unlocking these inner and often unconscious struggles will lead to powerful healing experiences, self-compassion and a deep sense of self-worth. For me it’s a privilege to be a part of your healing journey.

My approach is client centered with emphasis on cultural mindfulness. I facilitate clients to develop self-awareness about unhealthy patterns of communication and interpersonal relationships that may create barriers in living their life fully.

Finding a balance between attending to the current episode that led them to seek therapy but also explore root/ past causes of their current struggles.
